National Police Commemoration Day: 21 October

October 21 commemorates the sacrifices of ten CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Ten members of the CRPF who died while performing their duties are honoured on October 21. Ten Indian policemen were murdered on October 21, 1959, when Chinese troops attacked in the Hot Springs area in Ladakh following a disagreement between the troops. Since that time, the 21st of October is recognised as National Police Commemoration Day in memory of the fallen officers.

On October 21, a fresh contingent was organised under the command of DCIO Karam Singh and was made up of all available personnel. The Chinese Army started shooting at the Indian forces as they drew near a hillock in Ladakh. Ten Indian police officers were murdered while on the job, while the Chinese captured seven of them as prisoners. On November 28, 1959, about a month after the police officers were killed, Chinese troops delivered their bodies to India.

October 21 is currently recognised as Police Commemoration Day or Martyr’s Day as a result of a decision passed at the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories in January 1960. Since 2012, a procession has been organised on October 21 at the Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, Delhi.

National Police Commemoration Day 2022: Fact to know:

On October 15, 2018, the first national police museum in India was inaugurated in Delhi by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The Intelligence Bureau and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) are in charge of the museum.
